2014 Once & Future Wine Petite Sirah Palisades Vineyard- USA, California, Napa Valley, Calistoga (5/30/2016)
This is a very promising start for Joel Peterson’s new venture. Not overly tannic at first, this Petite Sirah is in more of a juicy mold, but gains a lot of grip on the finish in the classic PS way. Primary and even a bit grapey right now, it also has some herbal nuances and plenty of depth for the future. Now that I have had it once, I will leave my other two bottles for the future.
Palisades is a pretty fantastic property…I’ve bought PS and PV off the property for years but had to give up the contract last year…I wonder how long these PS vines will last there…the $$$ opportunity to plant that over to $300/bottle Cabernet seems impossibly tempting. FWIW the '13 Palisades PV we made had highest recorded complex anthrocynin levels according to the company whose tech we use to measure phenolics. A barrel or two of that magnificent stuff would go a LOOOOOOOOONG way in a blend.
I had Cameron Hughes Lot 167 in October of last year and it was very satisfying. Time has been kind to this wine. Anyone who has unopened bottles is fortunate.
I wasn’t aware of the rumors but, since Dennis and Ann are no longer actively bottling their wines, I don’t think they will mind if I confirmed the vineyard on that one. So, yes, you’re right, that was wine made from Palisades. I’ve got a few in my cellar but haven’t had one in quite some time so I’ll have to check it out myself.
That’s spot-on with my impressions, tasting it on pickup day. Juicy, herbal, and primary. The zin is a beauty right now; I think the PS is only going to get better.
I didn’t decant and I thought it drank very well. There’s a lot of tannin but it’s quite soft, sort of like a young CNdP or Gigondas (not flavor, just texture). The wine is inky colored which had me thinking I might be in for a fruit bomb, but it’s not at all. Really delicious. There’s a core of fairly ripe fruit but a lot of woodsy nuance.
I’m bumping up this thread from over a year ago because I am thinking about opening this PS (or perhaps the 2014 Zin) tonight. Does anyone who has tried this PS has an opinion as whether I should give it a long decant, short decant or pop n pour?
