This is just fantastic for the money. Of course, as I was texting Bobby with a pic of the label, he was texting me a pic of the 1998 Jamet Cote Rotie that just arrived at Chez Alfert. That ol’ country lawyer must know something.
2013 Domaine Jamet Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodaniennes- France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodaniennes (5/5/2016)
Violet-red colored. The nose smells STRONGLY of white pepper with raspberry in the background. With vigorous swirling a garrigue note appears, but it is quite ephemeral.
Flavors of white pepper takes center stage with raspberry again taking a backseat. There’s a wonderful freshness to this wine and the tannins are fine-grained. This is characteristically Northern Rhone and a great bargain at $25, While this won’t make old bones, highly recommended as a daily drinker. Only 12.5%abv. Delicious. (91 pts.)
Corey gets no love, he’s such a wallflower . . . .
Excellent note, my friend. Sounds right in my wheelhouse. Have you tried the 2013 CDR yet? I’ve been thinking of grabbing it since I won’t be touching the 2013 Cote Rotie for a long, long time.
Just had this yesterday as was impressed as well. For a $25 wine it punches above its weight. Seems that, for us AFWE, there are a lot of good Syrah options in that price range. This compares to the Herve Souhaut Syrah for about the same price
If I didn’t get love from you, I’d genuinely get no love at all. Thankfully, we’ve been good at keeping our mutual affection under wraps.
I would quibble a bit with the AFWE tag. To me, this is a wine that could appeal to a pretty broad array of palates. It’s not a ooze monster from Paso Robles, but I think it was both light(ish) weight and full(ish) flavored. I’d recommend it to anyone who thinks French wines are all thin and acidic. This is a beautiful wine for the money.
Corey, I think your tastes are more refined than a lot of wine drinkers. It’s not an ooze-monster, but it’s a 12.5% wine that is scarcely garnet, thoroughly unsweet and dominated far more by white pepper than by fruit. I friggin love it and could drink it all day. Had some non-wino friends over who like supermarket wine with oak and baked fruit and they all didn’t know what to make of it. I think it’s wonderfully balanced and put it in the same category as Gilles, Gonon and Souhaut. But I think those are AFWE producers on the whole.
