2012 Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio - Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol (3/25/2016)
This wine was brought over by a neighbor friend a good year plus ago. I’ll confess - I didn’t think I’d like this wine, but kept it in our kitchen wine fridge waiting for a time to pop it open. Well, that time came tonight. Was looking for a lighter white, at a time when I wasn’t interested in opening a more expensive bottle.
There isn’t much of an aroma to this wine, but the 2012 still shows a fair amount of fruit upon the initial taste. Just when you think the manufactured sweetness will quickly follow, it doesn’t…the mid-palate is much drier and then it finishes just right. There’s little sophistication here, but it’s a clean wine, and does a decent job of balancing the fruit and acid.
This is a perfect wine for a warm summer day, out by the pool, where you’re more focused on your surroundings than the wine itself (no introspection here). I couldn’t help but notice the price of this wine is ~$20 per bottle. This drinks more like a $15 bottle, so hopefully it can be found cheaper elsewhere. Would I purchase it? Doubtful, as there are more interesting wines out there in this style and price range. But I am glad I didn’t re-gift this or throw it out. Drink now.
