2012 Sandler Wine Company Karamy- USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (5/26/2014)
This doesn’t taste like ANY white I’ve tasted before, my wife’s WOTY.
Medium depth in color, like a dark straw. Aromas are complex but I jumped right into it as we prepared chicken tikka masala. Without previously tasting the wine indian probably wasn’t the best choice. Wrong, this wine is amazing. Huge palate firing on all 12 cylinders. Lemon rind, creme brûlée, anise, baking spice. Easily the most complex white I’ve tasted. Wife requested I order more, that never happens. Heavy mouthfeel but there’s plenty of acid. Finish is enormously long.
The 2012 Karamy White Wine is a 50/50 blend of Marsanne and Roussanne. It’s entirely from Saralee’s Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. The Marsanne and Roussanne were picked and fermented separately in netural, French oak barrels. It took a while for the Roussanne to complete its fermentation, 10 months, actually. The Marsanne went dry in only about a month’s time. Blending was carried out only a few days before the bottling, in January 2014. Karamy is a 50/50 combination of my two sisters’ names, Karen and Amy. With a nose of honey, nutmeg and bee’s wax, the 2012 Karamy has a soft, mouthfilling texture that combines the flavors of pear, anise and key lime. It’s drinking well already and should continue to do so through 2015.

Thanks a lot for the kind tasting note, and yes, you did clean me out of this wine within a few hours. I had to declare it sold out for the vintage. Sorry, Chris Seiber. The delay in my response is that I was getting ready for the namesakes of this wine, my sisters, Karen and Amy, who are now visiting CA from the east coast. I had to break the news to them that the vineyard from where this Marsanne and Roussanne was sourced has been sold to KJ, and that it’s no longer available to me. So, there will be no 2013 Karamy, but I hope to find another good site in time to make some for 2014.
