TN: 2012 Campesino Baybos (USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast)

There should be more wine like this being produced in California. Had lunch today with Macario as I was selling him some boots. He brought this wine as a gift. Very generous since he only bottled 62 cases. I didn’t plan on opening it tonight but today was not a good day for me. As multiple vehicle problems cost me sales and repair dollars that I was not prepared to absorb. When I got home, after working on the truck for an hour, the question was posed to me. “What do you want to drink tonight?” In lieu of a double Jack I decided to open this bottle. I needed something good to happen. So glad it delivered!

Disclaimer: This bottle was a gift from the winemaker.

With that said, Dayum! What a great bottle of wine. 60% Syrah, 35% Grenache, 5% Mourvèdre. Lovely floral aromatics with some down home funk, rich fruit, full juicy core, lifting acidity and moderate tannins that make it easy to open at such a young age. Beef stir fry, a little soy sauce, Baybos… What a match! 13.6 abv, easy drinking, totally satisfying. I don’t score wines as a rule but this one would score big for what it delivers and the value it represents.

Oh, BTW, Macario said he is getting some Las Madres fruit this year. Hell yeah. Between him, Mike Smith and Robin Akhurst I going to have a great selection of top notch Syrah in my cellar.

Thanks for the kind words Brian! Glad you enjoyed the Baybos as much as I do making it.
I am super excited about the Las Madres fruit for this upcoming year and can only hope to do it the justice that Mike, Robin and others have.
Here is hoping today is better than yesterday!

Given what Macario has done with the Lakeville Syrah over the last several years the Las Madres should be a killer. Looking forward to seeing what he does with it. Also I totally agree with the Baybos that is drinking great right now and should develop for many years in bottle!

Wow, I can’t believe there aren’t dozens of notes on this wine posted here, as this is among the best wines I’ve had from BerserkerDay, ever. It’s a little confounding, as one wouldn’t expect a wine of 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache from Sonoma Coast to have this brightness in character. Blackberry, spring flowers (I think of spring flowers as being small blossoms, with lots of foliage that you also pick up), and a hint of meat on the nose. Super bright blackberry and raspberry on the palate, finishes with really great acidity. It feels more substantial on the palate than it looks, but it stays light because of the acidic profile, which carries through to the finish for quite a while.

Fantastic, seriously. Love this wine.

Just joined the mailing list. Thank you gentlemen!

We obviously have the palates of a Yak!
