Here is a perennial winner for me. I love this SLH plot and what it can do. As much, I like the way Adam has made this wine for so many years, keeping the price sane and in check over that time too, as I paid $29 for this wine. Ridiculous when I think of the 100 plus I paid for the Allemand 2011s last week. I’m not saying this to boast my package (that was a budget killer purchase FWIW), but to create a comparison that there is diversity all around us and wines like this Novy can do great things, as much as Allemand can do. I am still left wondering why we don’t talk more about the SLH, about legacy syrah producers like Adam Lee and his wines. I’m a firm supporter of this wine, always will be. Thanks for reading.

2011 Novy Family Wines Syrah Rosella’s Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands (6/4/2014)
About a year exactly since the last bottle. Had this one now open about 90 mins. Pretty similar to 2013’s bottle, with solid aromatics of pepper, flower and tar notes, then a plush and gentle palate with light chocolate, pepper and teriyaki. Some acid and structure grips down a little bit in the finish, which I like as it gives the other plush notes some anchoring. Plenty for tomorrow to have a Day 2 note but from an open and pour strategy, this drinks pretty well…Ok, so this has been open just over 2 full days. I drank about 1/2 two nights ago, didn’t touch it y/day, getting back to it today. This has really fleshed out nicely, showing a good broad core of cherry and blackberry fruit, char, pepper, some citrus and the same chocolate note. It also shows a dark color, which I didn’t notice when I opened it. For a 2011, and all the bad rap that vintage has taken, this wine shows what can happen with a great vineyard, a talented syrah winemaker and care. I have bought and drank this wine every year since the 2001 vintage, I wish more did so it was part of the larger CA syrah discussion. Thank you, Adam.
