2011 Enfield Wine Co. Chardonnay Heron Lake Vineyard- USA, California, North Coast, Wild Horse Valley (3/30/2014)
Cloudy yellow color is intriguing. It smells tropical and citrusy. There’s a good bit of creamy fruit and wisps of coconut that give way to salinity and acid. Finishes clean and elegant. John gets a lot of fruit presence in his wine without the wines seeming too ripe or feeling overdone. I like that.
I couldn’t quite pull all the tropical flavors either, but last night I got some clear coconut notes on the first glass.
You are right about the energy and balance. Good wine.
We opened this with a great scallop and roe dinner Mel made along with another board-darling Chardonnay, Enfield killed that bottle. Kind of reminded me what PYCM might do if raised in Nor-Cal.
You guys are killing me. I am trying so hard to keep my hands off these, as I really think they will improve with a bit of time, but it sounds like it’s very fine right now. As an aside, a number of notes have commented on the cloudy nature of the wine. There is in fact a small amount of sediment type stuff in the wine, but if you let the bottle stand up for a good while, it settles out as a small plug on the bottom, and the wine itself is crystal clear. I imagine it could be decanted off carefully if that is an issue, but I don’t think it makes much of a difference in taste.
I’m going to try to wait on my last couple, too.
Though, it’s drinking pretty fine right now.
Thanks for the info on the sediment.
Wasn’t bothered by it in the least.
I think we killed our last bottle last night with grilled Cabezon. Still cloudy and as a pop n pour more lemony for awhile. Last glass had that tropical wowza thing easily noticed. Slight oxidative notes maybe too. Really good, wonder if I have more.
