TN: 2011 Domaine Bertheau Chambolle-Musigny

  • 2011 Domaine Bertheau (Pierre et François) Chambolle-Musigny - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny (10/26/2014)
Light and airy Chambolle that has an expressive nose of crunchy red fruit and spice. Starts of with a nice silky mouth feel and the same fruit and spice profile but a green note start to pick up in the mid palate and becomes more pronounced through the finish. For me the wine is good but the green note is robbing its potential to turn into a very good Chambolle. I don’t have enough experience with greenness in Burgundy but wouldn’t think this is going to go away so I will drink mine early. Good (87 pts.)

Thanks for the note. I have found more and more bitter pyrazine notes in many 2011 red burgs. Most recently a Bouchard village Vosne. So much so that I will avoid the vintage.

Fred, thanks for the note. This had the most green of any 2011 I’ve tasted when I had it several months ago. A shame as Bertheau is one of my favorite producers.

I have a couple cases of 2011 Bertheau. Hope my experience is better!

I tried one of these fresh off the boat and it was by far my least favorite Bertheau I had ever had. No elegance at all and a weird disjointed character overall. Sounds like its improved slightly but not much.

Air was not a friend as the green note got more pronounced with time and it started to lose it’s light and silky profile. This was its best after being open about 30 minutes. I’m assuming cellar time will not help but interested in any other feedback or experience ?

This was identical to my experience with 2011 Bertheaus. I tried the Chambolle x 2, the Charmes 1er x 1, and the Amoureuses x 1. They were all affected. The green was less apparent with the Charmes and Amoureuses initially because there was more fruit to cover it up. But as they got more air, the green become more and more offensive until they were similarly undrinkable.

Oh, dear. I bought the Charmes.

I bought a couple of cases total of 2011 and in general, I’m glad I stopped buying. Too much green/under ripeness. Like 2004s, I may have to drink these off early. If they get worse with air…that’s how the 2004s seem to behave.
