2011 Cameron Pinot Noir Dundee Hills- USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills (1/4/2015)
always an interesting pinot. There is a prevalent animal hide funk - even smoked animal hide. This is in the nose, palate and finish. While this might seem unpleasant, it isn’t - it is integrated well with reduced ripe raspberries and rhubarb pie filling. There is also a very nice tang on the finish. There was a bit of spritz on opening but that soon went away. The wine continues to evolve and can be enjoyed now with air. I can also see this wine evolve a bit more. All in all - pretty damn impressive for $24. (92 pts.)
I coincidentally had this bottle last night, too. I didn’t detect any spritz on opening, but I agree with your note. It’s actually in a pretty good place right now and I’d open it before 2012 and 2010 for sure.
Without overtly calling attention to this, this is the wine I was tasting when I posted on “Brett or Sweat?” You can search. It was not that long ago and I never said which wine it was.
Gotcha. Hadn’t seen the last post in that thread. My guess is it’s a combination of reduction and a lean vintage that produced a wine that wouldn’t be to your taste otherwise! Good reading on that other thread though!
A few years ago I was drinking and loving bold fruited Syrah and BDX blends. Then I discovered these earthy, thin, austere Pinots and can hardly bring myself to open anything but a PN, GSM or Cab Franc. I also like nasty beer.
