2011 August West Pinot Noir Graham Family Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (10/4/2014)
Pretty carmine color. Maybe a bit darker than my latest Pinots.
Nose of black currant in an almost cab way. The black red fruits show somewhat chewy but refined. Pretty interesting if I must say. Palate shows a nicely weighted wine that leans over the lilty edge a bit. I get a interesting mix of the fruits with the black currant in charge and a small dose of black cherry. Some sassafras and an almost hint of syrah-like black pepper and meatiness that has my attention. Balance is pretty great and tannins large boned. The acidity really carries this all very well as I think in some situations I have encountered it can get messy. There’s a lot going on here. Finish is true and long and includes the northern Rhone-likeness i am receiving. A very interesting and thought I provoking wine that I may not have guessed to be a Pinot had I tasted blind.
