TN: 2010 Vignobles Levet Côte-Rôtie La Chavaroche

Seriously, as I was tasting this I kept thinking of Cornas. Helluva wine!

  • 2010 Vignobles Levet Côte-Rôtie La Chavaroche - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie (3/18/2014)
The aromatics start off with meat and very dark fruit, then the violets appear with a dash of white pepper and a little fennel; after a couple hours it is simply ethereal, a very light hint of coffee chimes in to add to the complexity; the nose is the real star at this time. Initially quite tannic on the palate, stern and not too friendly, but very deep and concentrated, with a firm mineral spine. Then it slowly starts to open a bit to reveal herbs and concentrated but not overripe dark fruit, the tannins become a bit chewier. A powerful yet somehow elegant wine. This is damn good, traditional young Cornas at its best – oh, but wait, it’s Côte-Rôtie! Needs years to develop its full potential, but I have to think it will be worth it.
