2010 La Posta Malbec Angel Paulucci Vineyard - Argentina, Mendoza (11/26/2014)
What’s really offensive here is the single vineyard designation on the label and the pablum on the back about “special growers” and terroir nonsense like that. Which is fine if they were shilling something remotely connected to the land, but this is purple-drank, bitterly extracted, cheap oak vanilla crap, which belies its listed 13.5% alcohol with a burning feeling I haven’t encountered since my last case of the clap. Commercial piss. (79 pts.)
But tell us what you really think.
Sadly, I think I can imagine just what the wine is like.
Funny, but I’d been thinking this week about seeking out some good high-end Argentine or Chilean reds. I fear that’s still a challenging search.
Yeah, I remember someone telling me the story on this bottling a few years back, can’t remember the details but do recall something about the label being misleading.
I tasted a few really nice Catena Zapata wines out of barrel last month. And of course I’m always happy to go with Crios wines.
One of the joys of thanksgiving is getting to drink the wines the salesmen at Garnet pushed on your mother.
I had a pinot from Wiliam Fevre’s Chilean venture a couple of years ago that was very nice, and great value at around $23. I had a nice Weinart Bordeaux blend in a London steakhouse a few years ago that also did the trick. But there do seem to be too many characterless wines out of Chile and Argentina.
Did she like it better than the Texier Cote Rotie?
No. She says it must’ve been a gift because she’d never purchase swill like this.
John, back on the old Ebob, Alejandro Audisio was a regular poster. He owns/runs a Buenos Aires wine shop. A few years ago he put together a six bottle variety pack of what might be described as AFWE Argentine Reds. He pretty much nailed them, with no small amount of difficulty. There were hundreds of options that didn’t make the cut…an ocean of labels. Hopefully times are changing.
Reds from Argentina and Chile have a ripeness stigma IMHO. I walked by Puro wine shop in Soho 2 weeks ago and wasn’t even tempted to stop.

You had a case of the clap?
Just one case? You underestimate me, Jason.
I know it just reminded me of a scene from a movie ‘I eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast’…
‘You eat pieces of shit for breakfast’…
He got a multi-case discount.
They’re called condoms. Look into 'em!
I’d suggest:
*** Structura Ultra 2006
Limited Release
Bodegas Navarro Correas
Mendoza
Really like this. I got it for $35 (a few years ago). I have some '08 too but haven’t tried it yet.
I have met Angel Pallucci, I’ll just say he is a gentleman at 70+ years old and cares about his vineyard like a parent cares for a child…sorry you were disappointed by the 2010.
There’s no way to know about the farming here, because it’s all obscured by winemaking. That’s the reason why the wine sucks. Good wine is made in the vineyard but can always be ruined in the winery.
When my wife and I visited Argentina in 2010 we preferred wines from Patagonia over wines from Mendoza. The Patagonian wines were not profound, but they were very drinkable and complimented the food.
Based on your recommendation, I bought the 2008 and poured it at my brown-bag group last night. It’s a nice wine – big, lots of depth and structure, but not hot or overoaked. It was pretty popular with the group (who had no idea what it was), but I found it a bit generic. It could have been from California or Tuscany and there wasn’t a strong varietal signature. (It’s 55% malbec and 40% cab.) Still, if you like that style, it’s a good value at ~$37. Definitely balanced. I gave it ~86 points.
