A wonderful and perplexing wine. Worthy of its own thread. Shockingly young. Makes me very curious about Haut Brion Blanc and La Mission Haut Brion Blanc, but given the price, those are likely not it my future any time soon. I’ll just somehow have to manage making due with this!
81% Semillon 19% Sauvignon Blanc. Cork is a bear and breaks in half. Incredibly young looking for a 15yr old wine- pale lemon yellow just starting to deepen a bit.
It’s hard to write tasting notes for this wine because it transformed multiple times over the 5 hrs open. It started a bit closed, a touch waxy with hints of yellow fruits. But it blossomed into interesting tropical fruits and golden delicious apple, with apple blossom on the nose, a core of sweet fruit with some astringency and a medicinal bitterness on the finish. Then it got leaner, more Loire in style, with a touch of greeness and classic Sauv Blanc gooseberry. The acidity seemed more pronounced at this stage- just zinging down the palate. Back and forth back and forth. And there were lots of stages in between; some apple, some gooseberry, now pineapple, now wax.
This was like drinking 10 different wines throughout the night- all of them beautiful in their own way. A really unique experience that was both utterly perplexing and thoroughly enjoyable. A definite rebuy.
