2010 Domaine Marquis d’Angerville Volnay - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay (5/13/2015)
Medium garnet in color, the nose on this is a little worrisome, with a distinct skunky/sulfur aroma, showing a bit of orange peel and a hint of coffee; lovely palate of medium dark cherry, with deep raspberry notes, excellent acidity, fine and silky tannins. Way too young, but opened on a lark to watch the Warriors go up against the Grizzlies. First bottle of the Volnay I’ve had, I don’t know if the sulfur/skunk is in all the bottles, or it’s something in just this one, or if it just needs many years to shed the sulfur. (90 pts.)
I haven’t had the regular Volnay in 2010, but the Volnay 1er Cru a couple of months ago was a lovely drink and we didn’t have any issues with sulfur or skunkiness.
