2010 Domaine Duseigneur Lirac Antàres - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Lirac (10/30/2012)
60% Grenache/ 40% Mourvedre. Pretty much pop & pour, but enjoying slowly to let it breathe. Clear, yet dark reddish violet. A tad reductive at first, but recovered quickly. The nose is alluring and shows some sweet red & blue fruit & black pepper. A big, full bodied Southern Rhone wine. This enters with Grenache typicity. Raspberry & some light herbal flavors. The Mourvedre components really take over the mid palate, loads of black pepper and a firm wall of tannins. Chewy mouthfeel. Wonderful, brooding length.
I think this is a courageous wine. I feel that due to the absence of Syrah in the blend. That would have softened this a bit and added a bit more acidity. The absence has created a muscular wine one might look for in Bandol and sacrificed some brightness which would make it more versatile with a meal. It really works though. Delicious.
