2010 Big Table Farm Pinot Gris Wirtz - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley (2/3/2012)
Another version of what I am sure will be many more white wines vinified on their skins, this wine is pink with a coral orange hue. Initially served at around 55 degrees F, the nose reveals strawberries at first leading to sour apple and chamomile herb tea notes. This did not taste like any Pinot gris I have had before, as this was much more dry and there was a salinity that was really unexpected and made the wine food friendly.
As this came to room temp, 65 degrees F in this case, this became a little strange. Now the nose smelled “dirty”, damp earth with a tobacco hint, and this lead to a grapefruit/citrus finish. The wine flavor had also demonstrably changed, with the acids being more forthcoming, and out of balance. Not sure how I felt about this one, I have read that “orange” wines need extended air time, and this did not really happen here as it was only around for 4 hours.
