TN: 2010 A. et P. de Villaine Mercurey Les Montots

  • 2010 A. et P. de Villaine Mercurey Les Montots - France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Mercurey (5/15/2012)
Engaging aromatics of fresh flowers, cherries and chalk. It is fresh and crunchy in the mouth, loaded with red fruits that are tinged with earth and overlay a mineral base. It has good intensity and balance and whilst delicious now should age for a very long time.

Disclaimer: I have sold some of this wine.

That’s good to know…the 09 was similarly structured. I will be interested to see how these age.

By chance drinking the 09 right now. Perhaps a bit more of earth and darker fruited.

The '04 was an over-performer as well (and no green notes). Thanks for reminding me to start seeking some more.

Totally agree, the 04 was beyond stunning for it’s “humble” vineyard designation.

Jeremy- is the 2010 worth opening now? Any decanting?

Ian,
Lovely sweet fruit, worth opening now (just a pop ‘n’ pour job for me).
Best Regards
Jeremy

We drank a bottle of the 09 Montots over about four days, and the last glass was by far the best. Drink one or two young, by all means, but I take Villaine seriously when he recommends cellaring this wine for 10 years and more.

Got to day two, and it was much better than day one, four days wow.

Two days wow.

Good to hear. Found 09 too simple n straghtforward for my liking.

Merely the blush of youth.

de Villaine’s reds are very popular in Quebec Canada. They are always released quite early and they are gone fast.

They need bottle age and I have not touch any from vintage 2008.

Slightly learkage problem for La Digoine 2009 ( 2 out of 18 bottles).

If you found Les Montots 09 on the simple (or light) side, how about Faiveley – Mercurey - CdMyglands 09 ?

They will be very different at age 5/6.

I just glanced at the Villaine website and noticed that they have vintage-by-vintage drinking/readiness notes on their different bottlings.

i knocked off a bottle of this last night - excellent purity, detail and poise. Good stuff!

Totally agree, the 04 was beyond stunning for it’s “humble” vineyard designation.

I have had the 2004 on multiple occasions over the years and I agree. A great bottle of wine

Right on…( including La Digoine 09 ) and specially so when comparing the 07 and 08.

That’s interesting; I’ve had some leakage problems with a couple of the 2010s, including Les Montots.

Despite that, the 2010 Les Montots was an excellent bottle and I found some aeration really helped it (though the poor thing didn’t make it to day 2). Really, all of the Villaine Côte Chalonnaise wines I’ve tried are excellent, even without giving them several years to age. (I had a retailer two years ago get in a case of '08 La Fortune, and told me to drink them “within a year.” Maybe I’ll have to have a talk with him!)

I believe La Fortune is built for earliest drinking among the reds, Montots for latest.

Well, that’s good to hear, though I wasn’t complaining too much; the La Fortunes were great young. (Though I admit to liking wines younger than a lot of Berserkers.)
