There’s only 56 cases of this stuff, according to the label. So, not sure we’ll all be debating this wine with lots of TN activity but here’s mine. I simply don’t possess enough Burgundy battle scars to offer a comparison as to a village where this may compare but tasting this wine, it ain’t all that far off from some of the NSG stuff I have tried, perhaps akin to the Chevillon Vaucrains in terms of the flavor markers. Anyway, nice bottle of wine.
2009 Wind Gap Wines Pinot Noir Woodruff Vineyard- USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains (1/27/2012)
Opened 24 hours ago, dropped the cork back in and let it rest until today. Listed alc is 12.4%. Dark in color, the aromatics tell a story of whole cluster: peppery, cracked spices. The palate shows a sour cherry, zesty acidity and some strawberry that keeps some of the earthier and zesty pieces accented. The finish shows a long length, with same leaner and sour red flavors and earth/soil, along with a light minerality. I may drag this bottle to a burg dinner tomorrow night and see what people say about it blind, as it does have the burg-feel.
I believe this is true. During the recent online tasting that Pax did, he mentioned that, which I recall including the assignment of some cuvees currently under Wind Gap that will go back to the Pax label. I believe then Wind Gap would continue to be the home for things like this Woodruff, etc. I know Pax gets on the board occassionally so maybe he can pick up the chase here.
Nice notes, looking forward to trying. If you like this style try out the Ghostwriter label which makes Pinot and Chard fro
the same Vineyard. The winemaker is Kenny of Hobo wine Co. He makes awesome wine. I can’t believe his wines are not talked more about on this board as there are Hella AFWE, jk. His Hobo Wine Co. Alexander Vly cab at 12.9% alc is amazing.
Disclaimer: I’m a huge fan of Kenny’s wines.
Jon Bonne is a big fan and give Ghostwriter good press. I need to try both of these versions, as I’ve only had Stefania and Big Basin versions since the restoration.
Resurrecting an olddd thread here. Opened my final bottle of this and have been drinking it the last 2 nights. I continue to believe that the 2009 vintage in CA is giving and round, as the Copain and Kutch wines I have had from 2009 all show a similar accessibility. Thanks for reading.
2009 Wind Gap Wines Pinot Noir Woodruff Vineyard- USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains (7/15/2017)
5 years in between bottles, this is my final one. I opened this about 2 hrs ago, just been working down the bottle in a nice stem with a good temp. Listed alc is 12.5%, and I remember this wine from Falltacular many years ago and how we talked about the low abv. Funny to think now that for mainly all the CA PN I buy these days, the 12-13% range is pretty normal for my cellar. Back to the wine, the stems have softened on this wine, adding a cool, spicy pine needle component. The fruit shows a plump cherry, red apple and a tangy acid with some loam in the finish. It’s got a bit of the hard red candy thing going on, too. In total, this is drinking fine, with the fruit, acid and residual stems all pretty accessible.
