TN: 2009 Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Großes Gewächs

  • 2009 Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Großes Gewächs - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (2/26/2016)
This wine has been inconsistent for me, but this bottle was excellent. I can’t tell you if it has been my mood or bottle variation, but this bottle had all the good components of a dry riesling. The nose is floral with a strong honey streak without sugar. The palate is citrus, pineapple and white fruit. the bad bottle had a bitterness to it, but this one did not. There was half a bottle left after the first night, so I recorked and threw it in the refrigerator. The second night, it was still outstanding with no deterioration and little change. The finish is long. (91 pts.)

Thanks for the note Jay. Schaefer wines are showing up here in AB at long last.

I’m not sure, but I think I bought this one at the recommendation of Lyle Fass. High acid, which is Lyle’s style. It’s a Terry Thiese Selection imported by Skurnik in New York. Not the greatest Riesling I have ever had, but quite delicious and nice complexity. I did not get any petrol, which for me is a big plus, because it is up there with brett as two of my least favorite flavors.
