TN: 2009 WesMar Pinot Noir Russian River Valley

  • 2009 WesMar Pinot Noir Russian River Valley - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (3/15/2016)
This is one of the most interesting and fascinating wines I have had in a long time. Decanted and then followed for about 2 hours. I once had a wine blind and I said that it tasted like Port without the sugar, without the extra alcohol, and thus without the syrupy component. It turned out to be a dry Touriga National. I gave much of the same flavor here. Not like a syrupy old style Turley or other 16.5 ABV Zin, but a very nice wine with some of that fruit flavor you get from Port. The nose is a match. The mouth feel is velvety. I like it.

PS - there was a ton of sediment in the bottle so a careful decant is essential. This bottle has been laying on its side for over two years. I carried upstairs from the cellar, tilted it only enough to open it, and decanted it carefully until I could see the sediment in the neck. Lots of fine sediment left.

PPS - No annoying west coast pinot funk/coca cola/whatever, which is a big plus for me. (91 pts.)

What? With the trashing they took in Wine Advocate, I thought this would be a magnet, at least for Klapp.

Not surprised at all. These are fantastic wines.

I recently enjoyed a 2009 WesMar Balletto Vineyard which was a couple people at the tables’ WOTN.
