TN: 2009 Tercero/Cabot Les Deux Comtés

  • 2009 Tercero/Cabot Les Deux Comtés - USA, California, North Coast, Humboldt County (10/19/2014)
Wow, what a nice surprise. Clean, lifted, floral, earthy, the powerful side of feminine, balanced - the descriptors, all positive, go on and on for this one. But really, where it shined was at the table, with a lot of really diverse (though savory, all) main dishes. An excellent expression of each of the respective terroir (50% each from Humboldt and Santa Barbara counties) and the respective winemakers as well. A Syrah heavy blend that invites another taste/glass instead of acting like a thick, syrupy monster. 14,5% abv (fully integrated), this has 5 solid years in front of it before any decline. highly recommended

PnP, served non-blind.

I just brought this home from my storage to try. Very timely note. Short ribs?

I’m dying to try this

That was great juice 2 1/2 years ago at bottling. need to revisit.

I agree. When we tasted with this Larry I thought it was one of the stars of his lineup. I’m trying not to open any for another year or so but I find myself regularly eyeing them when looking for a syrah to drink.

Thanks for the note from the OP.

Just an FYI - we still have some of this in stock and you can feel free to order either from John or myself. It’s a wine that, to me, still has plenty of life left in it and I still dig it on days 2 and 3 more than on the day that it’s open usually.

I always enjoy doing ‘collaborative’ stuff, especially in a situation like this where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts

Cheers!

Glad I still have a bottle left.

I think short ribs would work quite well. This is a really versatile wine, so your sides/starches/sauces/etc. will be equally important (and fun) choices to sort out, too. Let us know [cheers.gif]

I have a couple of bottles I bought from Larry. I tried it at Franktacular early this year, and it seemed pretty tannic and hard at that point, so I figured it should wait some number of years. Tim (or anyone else), do you think this is a good time to open one, or am I better off waiting? I don’t mind waiting if the wine will improve.

Chris,

I’ll open one in the tasting room today and give you my impressions - okay?

Cheers!

Sounds like tough duty. We appreciate it, Larry. [snort.gif]

Well, Chris, I need SOMETHING to drink with my bread

My apologies for posting the LdC with a CABOT label on my site. This is NOT the label. I just had to get something up on our site and didn’t have the final label design at the time.

Do you use the same blue/black label that Tercero uses or a different label?

Chris et al,

There is only one label - the one that my daughter designed that is on the bottle of those of you who have already received it.

As promised, I opened a bottle in the tasting room and had it decanted and returned to bottle before I got there. Here are my initial impressions:

Old world aromas; rustic but not bretty; smoky, earthy, with a touch of bitter chocolate; fruit is in the background and, to me, it’s leaning toward blackberry and cranberry (to me that is)

Initial taste - medium to full body; acidity noticeable but not off putting; plenty of tannins but again, not off putting; brambly, fresh acidic fruit; smoky, touch of chocolate, still quite young and could use more time, but plenty enjoyable now for those who like the ‘rough around the edges’ quality of a younger wine.

Hope that helps, all . . .

Cheers!

Opened my last bottle of this. Much bolder and bigger than what I remember from previous bottles. Deep black and blue fruit. Almost like this has been in a deep slumber for the last decade. Seems to have plenty of life left.

Thanks for taking one for the team! I still have a few bottles left and John may have more - this wine should continue to go out for awhile . . .

Cheers!
