TN: 2009 Stein Riesling St. Aldegunder Himmelreich Kabinett trocken

  • 2009 Stein Riesling St. Aldegunder Himmelreich Kabinett trocken - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (2/22/2012)
…a perfect wine really, what with all of the highly touted high alcohol wines/GGs, this Kabinett trocken @ %9.5 is just what the doctor ordered. This dry beauty is nimble and sure -it doesn’t feel like it needs a little RS to make it complete- and light bodied. This light frame is punching hard with mineral, glass, sand, white fruit, hint of grapefruit. It is clean and pure and simply delicious. Stein has blown me away lately! (95 pts.)

Sounds good! Haven’t encountered the producer Stein though, nor heard of the town of St. Aldegunder before!

They are ancient ungrafted vines. Hopefully Lars will chime in and tell us more about the site. The Mosel wine blog has very detailed information about these wines.

Charlie: Thanks for the shout-out. I did write a post about the site in my old MWM wine blog: http://www.moselwineblog.com/?p=130.

My last blog entry was in February of last year. I’m hoping that Dan Melia will eventually continue on with the blog that I started. He supposedly has a post lined up on Ulli Stein.

For my upcoming Mosel Wine site, I’m planning to do special in-depth articles on specific vineyards and their history. I’m in the midst of sorting out all the complications in regard to the Ayler Kupp. Florian Lauer has been a great help. And I did some work in the city and diocesan archives as well.

I met ulli on a NY road trip a year or so ago. A real iconoclast, has been litigating with Germany for decades for ability to grow spatburgunder in th Mosel. His 08 spat from this vyd is very special…

Henry: Ulli was indeed one of the pioneers for Spätburgunder on the Mosel. He also fought the German authorites – taking it all the way to the EU – on allowing to make straw wine in the region once again. http://www.moselwineblog.com/?p=2800

The vineyard Weinlagen

Charlie: Thanks for the link. The more narrow section towards the top (of the image) and nearer the dam is the original Himmelreich. Lay is the old place name closer to St. Aldegund.

Lars, thanks. Do you have detailed digital maps?

Charlie: No, I don’t. As for the place names, I’ve seen old photos with the sites marked. Ulli also showed me the borders on my visits in the vineyards.

Agreed, love the wines from Stein. Second only to Lauer in the MWM book for me. Amazing cut and precision. Wonderful with food.
