TN: 2009 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

This is some good wine and a steal at $25. I cant think of another pinot that could beat this at its price point. IMO, the 50% summa vineyard juice in this blend is noticeable and should help carry this wine for many more years.

  • 2009 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (2/6/2011)
Decanted at cellar temp for 2 hours. Dark translucent ruby color with some lightening at the edges. Nice lovely nose of cranberries, pomegranate juice, touch of sous bois, hint of orange zest and some exotic spices. Darker fruit profile on the palate versus the nose. Tart cranberries, raspberry puree, some dark fruit elements, a bit of tobacco and the smallest touch of toasty oak. Most pronounced spices on the palate including some nutmeg, allspice rolled with some baking spices. Medium body and decently concentrated while remaining graceful and light weighted. High toned acid, some round and present tannins, long sappy finish, good balance and more spice on the back end. (90 pts.)

I was surprised that this was the featured at Bottega when we were there in November. (I didn’t know then that TRB was also the winemaker for Michael Chiarello.) Since I had been reading the hype on the board and this was my first opportunity try any Rivers-Marie, this was a no brainer. After tasting the wine, it was clear to me that I needed to purchase my allocation when it was offered. I was shocked when I found out the was only $25.
