TN: 2009 Palmina Lagrein Honea Vineyard

A prior vintage I tasted seemed to be kind of dull despite the deep color and ripeness. This vintage really popped, though. I’ll find out what Alto Adige Lagrein tastes like soon; my guess is this Palmina is much more Cal than Ital. But definitely Cal in the best way–delicious, structured and fun to drink with a rich meal (like the beet gnocchi they sent with the foodie shipment).

Wow is this delicious! I don’t yet have an Alto Adige reference point for Lagrein. Regardless, this is the best of what SBC has to offer. Nose of ripe black fruits, anise and sage, a really intoxicating , effusive and exotic bouquet. A mix of pomegranate and cassis on the palate followed by fine yet not overly sweet tannin. Lovely texture and mouthfeel, med/full body. The acidity and freshness really makes the ripe fruit pop. Definitely new world in fruit concentration, like a high quality Malbec, yet not spoofed or roasted. The structure is woven into the wine and this may cellar. However, there is little reason to delay gratification. (92 pts.)
