2009 Lewis-Weiser Cabernet Sauvignon House of Cards - USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford (2/4/2012)
Never one to be a ‘remember when’ type of guy, I can honestly say I love the direction the ‘New’ Napa Cabs have gone in the last two to four years, especially those made for early enjoyment. This one is my buddy Jeff Lewis’ label named House of Cards. When we had chatted about it last year he graciously offered to send me one of his bottles from the 2009 vintage. He gave me a rough set of directions to open for 4-24 hours previous to drinking, but since I have the patience of a randy 20 year old on the second date, I go pop and pour. Today is a great day to sit and watch ‘one’ since I am home-locked due to the mrs being on duty and I will have all day to do so.
Somewhat dark with purple tinged edge. Nose of sweet black cherries and red currant. It is super fragrant and lithe in is approach. Nothing heavy and obnoxious. Palate shows great breed, creaminess and poise … remember, this is Georges III fruit—and it shows. This has wonderful balance with a medium weighted mouthfeel; some hints of violets, cellar floor, new leather and a slight note of graphite. Very delicious and enjoyable this 2009 is. Elegance and grace is what this is about today. Sure, it’s young, but so what? Tannins hint at brawny, acidity deft and finish true to the great fruit profile that came before. In a way, this reminds me of a youthful Schrader GIII. I am blessed to have many friends that make great wines on both coasts. (94 pts.)
