TN--2009 Jayer-Gilles NSG Les Hauts Poirets

a “humble” villages to celebrate my friend Heather’s new position at Luckee, Susur Lee’s new place in Toronto (where, BTW, the food was fantastic and the portions fairly generous—a very different experience from Susur’s old place here). This was my first Jayer-Gilles and was popped and poured into a decanter and we tucked into it about 20 minutes in.

Well, this was quite the Fantastic Voyage. It quickly opens up with all sorts of flowers, hint of mint, pine needle, pomegranate seeds…just a bunch of stuff going on aromatically. And it belies 2009, lithe and remarkably fresh on first taste, with velvet tannins, berries, chestnut and mushroom. With the duck, heaven, the berry fruit really focuses in and bits of cinnamon and nutmeg jump in. And yet later, another twist and turn, all of a sudden it picks up rusticity with roots, tart berry and, Heather detects, a small sarsaparilla side. And on the tongue, NOW, after 2 hours or so, it’s very NSG—starting to get grumpy and edgy and a bit of game and feroce and iron. A truly amazing journey, a wine that delivered oodles of sensory and intellectual pleasure. Bad idea to start your burgundy education with something like this.

salud,

Mike

Nice note Mike.
When NSG is correct, it can provide so much pleasure. This sounds really wonderful.

I thought of you while drinking it, Don—in fact, Jay was there also and we reminisced fondly with my dad and Heather about our visit in August.

Heather may join us next time if she can get the time off…
