TN: 2009 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre

  • 2009 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru (10/23/2013)
I was a tad worried when I saw the vintage, 2009, of this bottle when it arrived at our table. I’ve found many 09s to be a tad fatter than I like, but then again, this is Raveneau. Knowing it would be young, we tasted it, and all of us agreed, this needed a nice little decant, so into the carafe it went. At first, this was slightly (but not unpleasantly) discombobulated, with a light entry leading to a slightly fat mid-palate, ending in a long finish. The texture and smell were amazingly beautiful, however, which reassured me that it would develop with some airtime. And boy did it!

Lovely aromas of lemony almonds, stone fruits, flowers, seashells, minerals and hints of that cheesiness we love in Chablis. Best of all, no premox! With air, this fleshed out nicely, rounding out and filling out on the to become a slightly fatter Montee de Tonnerre (thank you 2009) but that still had a linear streak down the middle carrying all the fruit notes. There was a lovely grip as it coated the mouth, ending with a long finish that wrapped everything up quite nicely. Lip-smackingly delicious.

Michel,

A bottle of Butteaux drank in France this spring was in comparable form. Generally, the brothers do very well in (slightly too) ripe vintages. Thanks for the update, but I won’t touch my bottles until 2017 or so.

Things must have gotten really bad if we make comments on wines from very recent vintages, such as 2009, like

The 09’s from Raveneau seem to be quite accessible at this moment as well as the 11’s - I had the MDT 09 in April and found it really delicious as well:-)

Sadly, that’s the case. I always cross my fingers and sacrifice a virgin or two when opening up white Burgs.
