TN: 2009 Francois Bertheau Chambolle Musigny Les Amoureuses

I decided to do a 6 month or so check up on this since I have about a case of it.
Glad I did.

This is really starting to firm up nicely and flesh out some detail. Now really showing elegance in fruit and also in structure. Very red vibrant fruit. Pure. The finish is long and ethereal.
This is what I expected when I purchased the wine.

Just wonderful.

Sounds good. There is a very strong argument for drinking Amoureuses when young, though a teenaged Jadot 98 at lunch today was lovely.

Great note Don. A full case, wow

tom - what’s the argument? never heard that, very curious.

Simply that at least in some hands-Drouhin, Mugnier and possibly Bertheau though not Vogue-it is seductive when new to an extent it never really regains;though my experience, while not negligible, is fast becoming historic as the price has made wines from this vineyard completely inaccessible and things may of course be changing.

Nice note Don. I tasted it in barrel and loved it, however since I’m not buying current vintage burgs, none has made it into my cellar. Perhaps I should reconsider, given Tom’s comment. See you in a few days.

Thanks for the note, Don. I’m buying only tiny amounts of 2009, like every vintage post-2005, but I did buy this wine. Also bought the bigger brother (Bonnes Mares) and the little sister (C-M Charmes). Can’t wait to receive my bottles and pop one of each, but your note sounds like this is a great example of Bertheau and Amoureuses and 2009.

LOL, I just checked my spreadsheet. Between Bertheau and Maison Ilan, that is over half of my 2009’s. I’m happy with that.

I think what is happening with the 2009 wines is that the fruit, which totally hid other components, is reciding. The wines are really charming to try out right now. I think they have phenomenal potential for the future.

You guys don’t mention Rion in association with Amoureuses. Is this because he doesn’t have enough oars in the water with the plot, the wine is not made in large enough quantity, or something else? I have a couple of the 08s and it’s been a year since I drank one but that too was an early look into the wine and it was for me quite good.

Those are good wines. Patrice Rion is a VERY good winemaker. No slight intended.

Don, and to get the wine, I didn’t have to chop off one of my arms to pay for it. [basic-smile.gif]

Wow, lovely. THanks for the note.

Interesting point Tom and I can see what you’re talking about. Is there any versions that you think age exceptionally well ? What do you consider the sweet spot for the above mentioned.

Les Amoureuses is my second favorite vineyard; however, its wines truly are becoming almost sillily expensive and since I also am buying only a select few Burgundies nowadays, I am somewhat sadly going without this one. I certainly enjoyed the note, nevertheless!

Cheers!
Andrew

Drat, I just bought a few! Someday, I really need to stop the madness!

Cheers!
Andrew

I’ve got a lone bottle of 1990 of this…anyone have that of late? Looking for right time to pop the sucker!

Judging by this thread, sounds like early 1993 should be just about right.

I’m working through a case of the 07s at the moment. Lovely wine.

For those whoe care where the vineyard is: Weinlagen

Tom, that 1998 was lovely!

Don’t you think you might be making the same mistake as Parker/Jayer? They claim that a burg should be balanced and drink well young to be a candidate for aging, which Faiveley and Gouges seem to refute. It seems you are making the opposite claim. If a wine drinks well young, then it won’t age. Yet, I suspect that Jadot had plenty of miles left.

I wish it were so simple! (Well, not really)

Anyway, I tend to overweight Chambolle in my purchases due to its accessibility and my lack of older bottles. But I sure hope they can age well.
