2009 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume- France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru (8/24/2014)
Fantastic Chablis, lemon nose, smooth mouthfeel, balanced acidity and nice fruit. This wine should drink well for years to come and at this price, a strong buy. VERY GOOD. (92 pts.)
I’ve never tasted the Fourchaume but recently drank a Vaillons which wasn’t too shabby and priced to move. Thanks for the rec Scott, I’ll pick up a couple to try out. How would you compare some of the French Chablis wines you’ve tasted to your favorite CA Chardonnay producers?
I really like this one for earlier consumption (although who knows, it might age well. I’m just still not entirely confident about aging Fevre). I actually just sit on it and wait for Premier cru to loss leader it. the latest version is Valourent young vines.
Rick, to be honest, I liked this wine much better than some of the recent CA chards, especially the Ceritas I opened the other day. Could be it’s a few years older, but the balance was much better (e.g. acid wasn’t overpowering) and there’s just something about the French chards that no matter how hard the U.S. wineries try, they just can’t duplicate. I think others have posted elsewhere on this, but if you can pick up great Chablis for $30-$40 per bottle, why even buy domestic? Closest thing I’ve had come close to this wine would be Liquid Farm, and thankfully, the White Hill is decently priced. Lastly (and more importantly), this wine was ~$38 per bottle compared to the $60 or more I’ve been paying for some domestics.
