TN: 2009 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Grézeaux

Add me to the list of fans of this wine. The general view is to age this, but even at this point it is a complete, accessible wine with complexity, beginning, middle and end. The attractive funkiness, elegance and tart red fruit qualities reminded me of a lovely young Burg I had recently, just for about half the tariff. Not exactly apples to apples, yet it’s hard for me to resist the QPR comparison.

Great young Chinon bouquet of menthol, blackcurrant, pomegranate and horse sweat. A bit funky in a saddle leather way, but not at all overpowering. Very fruit-driven for a Chinon starting with cassis then progressing to pomegranate. Has that classic Old World fruit/non-fruit juxtaposition between aromas and flavors. Great purity and precision. Light but firm tannin, mid/light weight, finely textured and medium/high acidity. Very pronounced chalky minerality on the finish. Enjoyable and not at all structurally punishing to drink young. Decanted for 30 minutes prior to pouring. (91 pts.)
