TN: 2009 Arnot-Roberts Syrah North Coast (USA, California, North Coast)

  • 2009 Arnot-Roberts Syrah North Coast - USA, California, North Coast (1/25/2012)
Been about 10 months since release, time to see where it is. Notes from day 2. Only 13% abv. Great nose of violet, roasted meat and some tobacco. Juicy palate with ample acidity, tart red raspberry, black cherry and pepper. Firm chalky tannins on a medium finish with lingering acidity. Developing nicely.

I really need to try one of these; I keep hearing nothing-but-good things about them. What’s the pricepoint on this, Brian?

Not Brian, but IIRC the North Coast Syrah is around $40 and the single vineyards are around $60 (per my Cellar Tracker input including shipping).

What he said rolleyes $35 and no shipping since I live a stones throw from the winery.

Thanks for the replies, guys. [cheers.gif]

How would you compare it to Wind Gap’s Sonoma Coast Syrah? (a wine I’ve loved each of the three times I’ve had it)

Arnot Roberts moved their winery, they are now in Healdsburg not far from Holdredge.

I have loved several of their other wines but not this one in past vintages.

You don’t know how far I can throw a stone [tease.gif]

Happy Birthday belatedly to Nathan.
This is a nice address.

Wedged between Ramey and Ceja (Quality Tires not the winery). Got to love Healdsburg.

I don’t, but that’s a pretty long throw! They found a nice location (old place was also cool), think it will be good for them.

Uncorked a 2007 Syrah (believe this was precursor label for North Coast) last night and Mel loved the wine. It seemed like it had evolved quite a bit from my last visit with this bottle. Makes me think their wines need real time sideways.

I had the 2010 At Scopa and it was great. Showing cool blue fruits, white pepper, floral boquet, and good acidity. The mouth feel was silky and the tannins were well integrated. $40 on the wine list and $35 retail makes this a good buy IMHO.

The 2010 is already out??!?? I’ve had the 09 a few times, and to me, these wines need LOTS of time, whether in bottle or decanted for a long time . . .

Cheers!

IIRC, the 2010 was released last Fall.
This was my impression as well from tasting at the winery last year. Mine will continue to rest.

Yeah, i’ve been frightened to open one - thanks for the early note Brian.
CT shows I bought the 2009 last March, and the 2010 in September, so it is on us to cellar the wine.
And i’m definitely planning to wait a few more years considering Brians note is from Day 2 and also based on a Hudson North Block (pretty certain it was a 2007) off the list at a restaurant last year - that sucker was clenched hard. While promising, it did not open much even after a decant and a couple of hours. I do remember tons of whole cluster, which this wine has as well right?

I’m taking much the same approach w/ the Wind Gap SC - finally opened a 2006 last summer and it started to show well after a 2 hour decant.

An 08 North Coast Syrah the other day was lovely… old school Northern Rhone in style: purity and restraint.
