TN: 2009 Anthill Farms Pinot Noir Demuth Vineyard

  • 2009 Anthill Farms Pinot Noir Demuth Vineyard - USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley (2/8/2012)
Another killer bottle from Anthill Farms and the Anderson Valley is what they do best. Pop and pour. Really quiet and shy at first. 30mins later and its friendly, expressive and damn good. Still quiet on the nose with some traces of earth and stems, but IIRC they destem 100%. This has the trademark Anthill flavor intensity without weight or impacting its dexterity. Intense darker cherry with bright cranberry and currant notes. Finishes with a touch of bitterness that add to the complexity and balances the fruit. Plenty of juicy acidity and a hint of firmness from tannins on the finish. What a joy to drink. (92 pts.)

Sounds great, Tim. I’m waiting for some '09 Burgs to arrive, and going to taste together. I agree 100% that Anderson Valley is what Anthill Farms is all about. Have you had the Comptche Ridge yet.

Tim, Another nice note on this wine. Wonder how the '07 is doing?

Lewis, I had the '09 Comptche a while back and found it outstanding but too primary for immediate consumption.

I just had an '09 Anderson Valley a few nights ago (just got my shipments - thanks Web!) and it showed really well. The first night with it, I only consumed one glass of it and it was clearly a bit tight and tart. After a night in the 'fridge, it really opened up the next day.

Didn’t take a formal note but certainly have solid expectations for the SVDs in 2009.

Thanks for posting your note on the Demuth

After having an 09 Poe Pinot from Anderson Valley last week, I really want to get up there and see what is going on. I like the flavor profile there for Pinot. There seems to always be a certain flavor (celery root?) in the Pinots from that region, especially the Deep End, that I like.

Lewis - I haven’t opened a Comptche yet, but I am going to either tonight or over the weekend. I’ll post a note.

Peter - I’ve been letting all of my AV wines sit and drinking the few RRV and SC bottles I’ve bought. So no idea. I did open an 06 Abbey Harris in January and I regret doing so. Still needs more time, much more time.

Roy - I hear you on the celery thing. I’m not a fan at all of the green meanies or anything close to the under ripe green veggie thing. You’d like this bottle, it has that celery going on as a background note and no where near a grean meanie.

Tim,
I wish I had posted on the '06 Abbey-Harris back in Nov. Sounds like I had a similar experience as it was not in a good phase.

I liked the '06 Abbey-Harris last June, but obviously young and more to come.

Agreed and amen.

Well, mine was weird. I did try that wine on release and agree that it is a special wine as was the '07 on release.

I opened an 06 Abbey Harris in may 2008, i remember it being all acids and tannins, but you’d get a sip that would turn your head for a second.

Tonight the 2009 AHF Demuth was crazy good, with scents of ripe raspberries and damp earth and crushed stones. Sappy and generous on the palate with real drive and energy and intensity. Weightless, yet intense. And a long, full finish, with crisp acidity giving focus. When a wine drinks this well, one should not expect a day 2 update. Outstanding, indeed borderline Exceptional.

Opened one the other night, and agree wholeheartedly. Terrific.
