TN: 2009 Achával-Ferrer Malbec (Argentina, Mendoza)

    Tasted over two days. Pitch black core with a slightly purple rim. Nose shows crushed violets, leather, tobacco leaf and black fruit. Consistent both days. The mid palate is consumed by brooding black fruit and licorice. A nice cut of acidity prevents flab. Lengthy finish accentuated by dry tannins and a hint of blueberry. Full bodied, and quite a big, serious wine.

Unfortunately on day 2 all of the flavor and structure components pretty much dive off a cliff and it just tastes faded and uninteresting. Drove this from the 89-90 range to 86, and if this sat around much longer it might keep dropping. Good wine to bring to a dinner where you know the bottle will likely be fully consumed.
The performance does not make me interested to taste up to the svd program that I’ve heard so much good about. (86 pts.)

Their SVD bottlings have declined in quality in my opinion. They are getting the same (if not higher scores), if I recall, but they have become monolithic and indistinguishable from other cheaper bottlings.
