2008 Villa Creek Bête Noire - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (2/26/2012)
P-n-P. Huge dark fruit nose leading immediately to fresh roasted coffee beans and roasted meat. The nose is intoxicating, and really makes one eager to drink. The fruit is front and center, as would be expected for such a young wine, and really sweet fruit is the best descriptor here. While at 15% alcohol, I never found the wine to be “hot” or liqueur -like, I believe the sweetness hid this well. The mouvedre brought some balance to this wine in the form of an earthy-smoke component and some salinity. Honestly, this wine was too easy to drink. This is meant to be consumed now, as there was no acid present at all, and I believe that time will only prove to knock this wine further out of disequilibrium as the fruit fades leaving, what? Probably just alcohol.
