TN: 2008 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Fourneaux

  • 2008 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Fourneaux - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru (3/4/2012)
This wine is all about the sappy strawberry, raspberry and sour cherry fruit. There’s certainly a lot of minerality in this along with some earth, tea leaf, and fresh tobacco. The texture is very light, but the wine has surprising power on the mid-palate and finish. All-in all, a very nice wine, but just as with the 2008 Bize Vergelesses, I find this wine slightly thinner and less complex than past vintages. That may not be a bad thing, but it’s certainly something to be aware of.

Patrick was worried about the stems in 2008 and destemmed a lot more than usual. He has since 2009 moved to 100% whole cluster on all his lots, even younger vines, because he now feels it adds more body and complexity than destemmed fruit. So, you can say he has come full circle.

I just stumbled across this old discussion. I recall you writing before, Andrew, that Patrick preferred his 08s to his 09s, calling the latter ‘wines for tourists,’ or something like that. Have his views developed since then?

Not to highjack the thread, but has anyone had the 2006 recently? I’ve been thinking of opening one of my two bottles before year end.
