- 2008 Rhys Pinot Noir Skyline Vineyard - USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains (8/18/2024)
We wait a long time for a lot of wines, and some of them don’t ever deliver. This one did. It delivered 100%. Sixteen years from the vintage, the promise of 2008 Rhys paid off. Still holding brooding dark fruit, it also had developed that earthy, forest floor tone that’s a bit of a Pinot Noir holy grail for me. Still showing some backbone, this isn’t tumbling downhill any time soon, though since it was my last bottle I won’t get to check on it down the road. Thrilled to have caught this particular bottle in a great place.
@Chris_Seiber poured this for us right at the start of the pandemic. I remember it vividly because we did the tasting via zoom and we used the small 4 ounce tradable bottles that we were relying on that time to share wines across town so we could continue to get together even if virtual was the only way to do it.
The bottle that Chris poured for us during that virtual was a Wow wine for me and that was four years ago, and look at now it’s still impressing you as to its quality, which I think says a lot about this particular vintage of Skyline and what it’s capable of doing.

Blind Tasting via Zoom (Over Zoom): Tasted blind. Holy crap, this is gorgeous. Balance and depth are immediately noticeable, as the wine is seamless across my palate. Soil/loam, red fruits with blueberry, both that exhibit a purity of ripeness and depth that is sublime. Outstanding, and yet another testament to me as to how good the 2008 Rhys wines are aging. I am thrilled to have one of these left in my cellar. Just wow.

I remember it well, that was a blind flight of 2013 Kutch McDougall, 2010 Thomas Dundee Hills, and 2008 Rhys Skyline, via the 4 ounce bottles and over Zoom.
We made a pretty good effort there in challenging times.
Just poured the last glass from the bottle. Still really good.
Thanks for the note. Have one Skyline Pinot and one Skyline Syrah from 08. Sounds like I need to find the right occasion to crack them….
That was a great bottle. Remember sitting at the kitchen table staring at the PC on zoom.

Come on and Zoom, Zoom, Zooma Zoom: Blind: guess Rhy and Skyline - walk off!
I don't know but when I taste a Rhy with this profile, it's just calls itself out. This is a very good wine in a great spot right now but no need to drink up. She's a beauty.
