TN: 2008 Rhys Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard (1 corked, 1 not)

2008 Rhys Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard - USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains (5/19/2013)

First bottle was badly corked. Rather than decide on something else to drink I went right back to the well.

A year and a half in the cellar has civilized this wine quite a bit. It’s still very dense, but the aromatics are much more interesting (flowers, dark berries, cool earth), and on the palate it is stern but not bruising. Overall it is still a coiled spring, waiting to extend to its full length. I would wait several years (5+) before venturing to open this wine again. Excellent potential. Too bad I am impatient.

Coincidentally, I opened one of these just last week. I don’t open this wine very frequently as it has been completely closed for a few years. While I don’t recommend opening it now, I was pleased to see that it is gradually returning to the potential it displayed in it’s youth. I hope our customers have enough patience to give this wine another 5 years or more (I agree with your forecast) as I do believe that patience will be rewarded.

I’m not touching my '08s. IMO the best and most ageworthy Rhys pinot noir vintage to date overall (haven’t tried any 2010s yet).

Given recent notes I may try digging out an '06 but I think they’re all buried in back.

It was just one of those nights when I knew exactly what I wanted to drink. The Horseshoe was in the racking versus in the stacked boxes. Most of my '08s are buried.

Not so say that I don’t appreciate the update from someone else’s bottle
