TN: 2008 Pneu Pinot Noir (USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley)

  • 2008 Pneu Pinot Noir - USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley (5/7/2012)
This wine was given to us by Scott Lewis, the founder of Pneu, after The Sense of Yountville food and wine extravaganza. When the event was over, Scott agreed to pose for a Wineberserkers Helmet photograph, but first he dashed back to his wine shop to grab a bottle of his own wine to include in the photo shoot.
When we were finished, he handed us the bottle as a gift. Scott is a young Irishman who hails from County Limerick and who owns a wine shop in Yountville. He organized the Sense of Yountville, which is a pre-release drink fest focusing mainly of Cali Cabs and the tremendous local food, but there are enough non-cabs to give everyone a taste of what is being grown in Napa. Proceeds support local programs for veterans of current wars.

We drank the wine two days later in Monterey with a friend on her 50th Birthday. This is a very nice, extremely well made wine with grapes that hail from the Anderson Valley. Excellent balance with nice cherry and red fruit flavors. There’s no cola flavors of Cali pinot funkiness and no disjointed flavors that clash in your mouth. There’s a very interesting herbal component that is not common in pinot noir, but it’s very slight. The wine is extremely smooth with a creamy mouth feel without cream flavors. The color is dark and the nose is fruity and almost sweet. The finish is relatively long. An excellent effort for what is only their second vintage. (90 pts.)
