2008 Mongeard-Mugneret Gevrey-Chambertin- France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin (2/24/2011)
Decanted for two hours and followed over two nights. The nose was somber, dark earth but brightened and revealed mineral tones. Feels a bit disjointed, just needs times for the parts to harmonize. The dark red fruits have some depth and richness with mineral notes. Acidity adds brightness and a tangy/tart edge. Tannins are fine and have a slight grip on the finish. There is some weight to the texture that gives this a nice mouthfeel. I like the style and a producer I’ll explore more. (89 pts.)
Thanks for the detailed note. I started drinking Mongeard Mugneret wines with their 2002 vintage and find all their wines impeccably balanced and true to their terroir. From their bourgogne, Fixin, Vosne, Gevery and Echezeaux the wines are just delicious even in vintages like 2003 and 2004 they made great wines. I look forward to tasting their 2008’s as well
Thanks, great to hear the wines are balanced. One of the things I liked was the flesh to the texture of the wine. In general, do most of the wines have that texture and mouthfeel?
I find the style of the wines just easy to drink when young or with 5+ years of age. I haven’t had any old wines from this house but I suspect they age extremely well based on what they show when young which is a superb balance of fruit, acidity and texture. Tim you should seek out some past vintages of their wines…
