TN: 2008 Giornata Il Campo (USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles)

Nice wine and on par with the $20 price tag. Nose has some spice/earth/oak elements. This is a darker, heavier, full bodied mostly sangiovese blend. Just starts to cross over the too ripe threshold, but seems to have almost enough acidity to keep from it getting tiresome. Decent depth to some sour dark cherry and licorice notes. Tannins are chewy and build up over time. An easy everyday drinker and more of a cocktail wine. It has me psyched to try the rest of their lineup. (88 pts.)

Nice note, Tim. The il Campo is meant to be a “pizza wine” while Giornata’s other wines are more “serious” in style. I liked this wine too - had it a few weeks ago with pizza at Marzano on Park Blvd. in Oakland.

Looking forward to opening a bottle of the Giornata '07 Nebbiolo - I tasted a barrel sample almost a year ago and was very impressed. We just bottled an '08 Nebbiolo at Harrington Wines in San Francisco on Saturday that’s partly sourced from the same vineyard Giornata uses - Luna Matta, way out on the west side of Paso Robles. Tasted pretty good on bottling day! Our “Gang of Six” (including Al Osterheld) has an '09 Nebbiolo (from Luna Matta and AJB vineyards in Paso) in barrel right now - hoping it turns out well!
