TN: 2008 Gary Farrell Pinot Noir Ramal Vineyard (USA, California, Sonoma County, Carneros)

  • 2008 Gary Farrell Pinot Noir Ramal Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Carneros (4/3/2012)
Pulled the cork and let it breathe for 3 hours. Drank a glass over 2 hours, paired with flank steak. Pomegranate, strawberry, and a slight spice note on the nose. Great acidity, with more red fruits, minerals, and forest floor. An excellent bottle of wine with a long life ahead of it. My first Pinot Noir from Gary Farrell…won’t be my last.

Scott, have you tried any of the Alysian wines that gary is now producing? I’ve tried a few that have been pretty nice. Also feel that carneros can surprise with the quality, though there isn’t really many producers with alot of buzz going, kinda overlooked these days.

Corey, I have not tried any of the Alysian lineup. But I will certainly seek them out. This was a really nice bottle, and I am certainly open to all things they make.

I haven’t had a Carneros PN in several year. Back then I was underwhelmed, but maybe I need to open my mind back up on them. It was long enough ago I don’t even recall what i tried.

Scott, gary sold his name and brand in i believe 98 or so… He stayed on and ran the program for awhile, then left… his non-compete clause in the deal expired and he started alysian wines… he has some great contracts, with Rochioli riverblock, Floodgate ( multiple blocks, Rochioli-Allen, Hallberg, and starr ridge. I have only had the russian river, wich is a blend of all of the sites, the rochioli riverblock, and the hallberg. All the wines have bright acidity and fairly low alcohols and ph’s for russian river wines. They are typically decently oaked, 40-45 percent new, with alot of 1-2 years… mostly f. freres and rousseau. Similar program mostly to the " gary farrell brand"

Hmm, sounds rather yummy! I like wines from Rochioli fruit. Thanks for all the feedback Corey - more wines to seek out, like i needed that!
