    Pop and pour. Pours a beautiful hue of purple. A powerful nose of black fruit, dark cherries, rhubarb, roasted meat and a little menthol. On the palate, the wine is well structured but hides it deceivingly well behind a silky texture. Though the palate is loaded with fruit, it doesn’t seem forced or spoofed. Dark fruit, beef blood and gamey flavors coat the palate. An very dense wine. The finish is not as long as I would expect from such a well made wine, but I can see that resolving itself as it gets more time in the bottle. Let this rest for another 12 months to settle down. Well look at that, it’s been 12 months already. [wow.gif] Hasn’t been much chatter on this wine since the post above and the HdR week thread that Todd started made me pop this one.

    Homage to HdR which starts this week. Decanted through a Vinturi and let sit for an hour. First iimpressions, dark nearly opaque burgundy color, nose of ripe blue fruit, red meat, garden soil and menthol. Palate is very rich red and blue fruit with some oaky vanilla but is supported with big acid and tannins though I’m not picking up much green from the whole cluster portion. Morgan doesn’t rack his wines until bottling yet the tannins remain firm. A touch hot on the finish but the acid and tannins linger. Get’s a little more floral after several hours in the decanter but still real young. Very lush and very food friendly.

I’m down to 2 of these and not planning on touching them for a while.

FYI on this wine Morgan says he lost Wildcat Mountain Vineyard which used to make the backbone of the Sonoma Coast Syrah, since Macrostie grafted it over to Pinot Noir. As a result, Old Lakeville will now make up most of the SC which means it should remain an incredible bargain, especially given the quality of this wine.

Glad it is showing pretty well- I think the 08 Old Lakeville is certainly showing better than the 08 Kick Ranch right now.

Also, it is true that Wildcat Mountain Syrah got grafted over to Pinot Noir so I have had to look elsewhere for Syrah to put into the Sonoma Coast blend. Though the blend is not finalized it looks like the 2011 Sonoma Coast Syrah will be in large part from the vineyard formerly known as Shanel when David Ramey was getting it, along with Old Lakeville and a trace from Hudson. I am also toying with the idea of creating a North Coast blend in lieu of Sonoma Coast this year as I have some stunningly perfumed but rather lean Alder Springs Syrah that I think would compliment a broader appellation blend nicely.

Poured the last 2 glasses tonight after it sat VV’d in the fridge over the weekend and a little olive note is coming up on the nose. This wine has many good years ahead of it. [thankyou.gif]
