TN: 2007 Windy Oaks Estate Pinot Noir Diane's Block Klein Family Mountain Vineyard

  • 2007 Windy Oaks Estate Pinot Noir Diane’s Block Klein Family Mountain Vineyard - USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains (12/28/2009)
I first had this wine back in the summer shortly after bottling and didn’t really enjoy it much as it seemed to be quite disjointed and obviously a little bottle shocked. A small taste at the Windy Oaks wine group pickup day a couple weeks ago was a completely different experience and led to picking up a couple of bottles. The 2007 Diane’s block is quite delicious with lots of ripe black cherry flavors and a smooth texture with the oak showing a slight mocha note. Nicely medium-full bodied with a long finish. As good as it is now, it should be even better when the oak integrates in a few years, if you can hold it that long. (92 pts.)

I went to the last pickup day on Sunday. It looks like overall their 2007 vintage produced good fruit and wines. Of the three wines they were pouring, I preferred the Whole Cluster; it had that extra floral, spice dimension, but not as backward and structured as some of Rhys 07 whole cluster pinots.
