2007 Villa Creek Pata Negra- USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (1/14/2010)
This one combines four grape varieties that Cris Cherry handles beautifully - Mouvedre (65%), Syrah (15%), Tempranillo and Grenache (10% each). Medium dark ruby red. Expressive and attractive red and black fruit aromas. On the palate, concentrated and focused rasberries, black cherry and cedar with overtures of smoke and pepper. Well balanced and very lush. Extremely enjoyable! (92 pts.)
Thanks for the note Mike! Going to be there Saturday morning for the annual birthday trip… should hit a half dozen wineries in two days and should get a decent read on the 08’s
Bad ass label. Love Pata Negra (the ham, not the wine, never had the wine).
With a name like that, I would hope for some kind of pork-based tasting note, no? Or is it just a reference to the Spanish nature of the blend?
Will go to Tablas, Villa Creek, Denner, Booker, Linne Calodo and L’Aventure… maybe Turley for old time’s sake… may get to taste a barrel or two at a couple of stops. I’m really curious how Paso’s fledgling sparkling wine program is coming along
I recommend calling Hilary or Simon at Graves Winegrowers to set-up a tasting for you. They farm the Ohana Vineyard (from which Cris Cherry sources his Tempranillo), and they do their pouring at the Denner facility. Their wines are similar to those of Villa Creek, but with a slightly lighter foot on the gas pedal. You could kill a third bird with that stone, if interested, by setting-up a tasting with Epoch, who also tastes out of the Denner facility. (I haven’t tasted the Epoch wines yet, but am very excited to do so).
If you’re up to it, it would be great to a hear a report of your trip when you return.
found out that Booker was out of wine and not open… went to four wineries today (Hug, Barrel 27, Anglim and Linne Calodo… and 15c Wine Bar), and should hit at least three tomorrow… will post impressions/notes in a separate thread… sorry Mike
