TN: 2007 Tercero - Syrah - Larner Vineyard - (CA, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley)

  • 2007 Tercero Syrah Larner Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley (1/27/2010)
    – cracked and poured –
    – drank last 1/3 of the bottle, a few hours after it was opened –

NOSE: very expressive nose; rich; earthy with some funk; oak; cherry; hint of anise; black/red fruits; underbrush. I could smell this all night long!

BODY: extremely dark inky purple color of great depth; superfine particulate matter; looks viscous; medium-full bodied.

TASTE: wow … I completely agree with those who’ve heaped praise upon this wine. Lots of tar; lots of oak on the finish; nice bit of earthiness, and a bit of a floral aspect on the finish. I could go for a little less oak, but this is a minor nit-picking quibble. This is rich, with great concentration of fruit that is in wonderful balance with ample acidity; further contributing to the balance of this wine is its relatively low alcohol level (14.2%) and the slightly drying tannins on the finish. The finish is long, clocking in at approx. 60 sec… I reckon this will age very nicely.

Brian,

Thanks for the notes - was interested to hear what you’d think of this wine (-:

Interesting notes on the oak - for this wine, I used 1-4 year old barrels - no new ones at all . . .

Thanks again . . . Cheers!

Thanks for the note - this was one of my favorites from Falltacular - looking forward to stashing a few away in my cellar…
