TN: 2007 Tercero Grenache Watch Hill Vineyard (USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County)

A walk with Grenache on the dark and structured side. Peppery/spice nose that carries through the wine. Darker fruit with chocolate and licorice notes. Chewy, dense tannins and a tang of acidity balance this wine out nicely. Texture has some weight and some smoothness to it. While fun to drink now, should be a treat with some more bottle time. Style-wise, I like what is going on here. Definately needs lots of air time, did a splash decant and put back into the bottle. Even after leaving the screw cap open (which I am a big fan of) and drinking slowly over the night, it has continued to unwind. (91 pts.)

thanks for the note, Tim. I just got one of these, as well, and will sit on it awhile based on your rec…

another thing I love about this wine (and many of Larry’s other Rhone varietals): [dance-clap.gif] it comes in a Bdx-shaped bottle!!! [dance-clap.gif] [winner.gif]

Tim,

Just got back from spending the weekend in Boise with the family playing in the snow and saw your notes . . . .

I really dig this vineyard and feel that it brings ‘something else’ to the grenache landscape. It’s located very close to Thompson Vyd in Los Alamos and is farmed by the same folks who farm that vineyard, along with a number of other key vineyards in Santa Barbara County.

It’s a cooler climate vineyard compared to Camp 4, the Fess Parker vineyard where I source other grenache that I use. This leads to a darker colored wine (and this one is 100% grenache) with darker, deeper flavors as well.

Though fun now, I feel this wine is still a youngster, and will really strut its stuff better with a little more bottle age . . .

Thanks again!

Cheers!

Looking forward to trying this … I really enjoyed the first case of Larry’s wines I tried. Very drinkable and well made. Just lovely.
