TN: 2007 Pegasus Bay Riesling (New Zealand, South Island, Canterbury, Waipara)

2007 Pegasus Bay Riesling - New Zealand, South Island, Canterbury, Waipara (9/22/2009)
WIML90

Tasted September 22, 2009.

Stelvin. Opened and served immediately. Light yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of kerosene, camphor, tropical fruit and peaches. Flavors of peach and mixed tropical fruits. Medium acidity and body. Drink over the shorter term. (90 pts.)

I had this last night with takeout Thai food (actually, half the wine was gone before the food arrived) and thought it was outstanding (91pts…and pushing 92). I agree with the note, subject to the caveat that “one man’s kerosene is another man’s petrol”. This is a “big” riesling, with loads of fruit, but acidity to match. The petrol in this wine to me was the perfect amount to give it a distinctiveness and exoticism far beyond what fruit alone could offer, but without interfering in any way with the fruit (which happens a lot with older Rieslings, where the petrol level rises, just as the primary fruit begins to fade, and overtakes the wine). I may grab a few more of these from Costco…

Indeed a very nice wine for the money, and readily available in case qty. at Costco.

If you can get your hands on the 2006 it runs circles around the 2007. Great QPR.
