TN: 2007 Paloma merlot

Not an inspired wine, on the contrary it may be the worst one I have tasted. Rather thin, alcohol shows quite a bit, and I’m not usually one who notices the alcohol. Very dissapointed with such a poor showing in a supposedly great vintage.

Hard to say Rick, usually Paloma is quite consistent with 01, 02, and 06 as my favorites. This one was thin, acidic, just not good. Maybe bad bottle, but I caould not detect any overt faults. I may try to convince the guys at the store to open up a bottle on their dime, but that’s the only way I would try it again. Too bad too, since the wine store in SD has it for $42.95 and was looking to get 1/2 case or more.

I had no notes, as I tasted about 250 wines that day, but everything goes into the memory bank (I never forget a smell or taste).

But I remember thinking, “wow, Paloma is not good any longer.”

I probably still have about 6-7 cases of Paloma merlot from the 1996 to 2006 vintages and it saddens me to see that the 2007 is not all that great. I never received an offering for the 2007, which I assume is a result of a spamfilter or the like, but I probably wouldnt have bought any of the 2007 anyhow. Jim Richards was and Barbara is a lovely person and the visit to their house on Spring Mtn was always a highlight of a wine country trip, but I have too much wine and I don’t need any more $50 merlots. Still, I felt a pang of guilt not following up with them and ordering some of the 2007.

Any particular reason why the '07 vintage would not be up to par? It was a great vintage for the region, without question, so wouldn’t the wine be at LEAST as good as prior vintages, given better fruit?
