2007 Mountfaucon Vin de Pays du Gard Vin de Monsieur Le Baron de Montfaucon - France, Rhône, Vin de Pays du Gard (11/20/2009)
A friend of us suggested this bottle. An interesting blend of 15 Rhone varietals: Grenache and Syrah predominately with Cinsault, Mourvedre, Counoise, Alicante, Carignan, Tempranillo, Muscat, Aubun, Viognier, Marsanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Picpoul. So basically a field blend!!
We popped and poured it at Pican Restaurant in Oakland. Accompanied lacquered duck, fried chicken w truffled honey butter, pork chop, and bass.
Nose shows earth, graphite and cherries. Not particularly deep or effusive.
Palate is fairly silky and the wine has a finesse to it rather than the more deeply fruited CdR’s that I have been enjoying. Shows plum, graphite, earth and toast. Finish is not particularly long and while it was a nice wine, it didn’t really grab my attention, playing more of a background role to the meal. At $45 it is waaayyy over priced. (87 pts.)
