Surpised to hear this wine getting panned so badly. Whatever lot of 2007s that got sent to my Costco were quite good. I’ve had several bottles and all showed very well, very much deserving of the 90 point score from Parker. I have poured it form several “wine” friends and they all thought the wine was a very good value too. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
I know Peter said the 2002 tasted similarly when it was released. I was not the biggest fan of the 2002 vintage Napa Bordeaux blends upon, or even for some time after their release. They tasted like jelly preserves. Eventually they came together, but eventually in most (and better) cases took over 5 years. While I have not tasted much of any of the 2007 vintage, perhaps it could be similar as Peter suggested.
Just sayin’.
Part of my evaluation is based on my experience with annual 6-12 bottle purchases of the Napa cab since the 2001 vintage. I bought only 1-2 bottles every other year prior to that. Since my brothers also purchase the wine I get to taste it many times over a several year period. I always try a bottle upon release to give it a try. To the best of my recollection the 2007 is the richest that I’ve tasted at this point in time. Peter, the bottle that I tried didn’t show noticeable acidity. In fact it was pretty flabby. IMHO
Just had a glass on night 2, still pretty damn tasty. I think you guys have just sandblasted your palates* with Kosta Browne and the latest $100+ cali cab mailer .
Disclaimer - I like Mikey P and Buski, just having fun.
I just had a thought (please no jokes Muck). What we should do on Thursday at Zach’s place is get a bottle of the '07 cab and mix it in blind with 3-4 other wines. It would give us both, and everyone else there, a fresh opinion on the wine. I want to like it, really, since it has been a no-brainer purchase for me for years. If I still don’t like it maybe I can pour some in it for taste.
I tasted it blind with a few 2007 CH cabs and 07 Educated Guess. EG came in first, and Mondavi 2nd to last. I think Mike’s use of the term “unfocused” is right on. Just sort of loose and jammy. Again, I’ve had the 06 blind a few times and always scored it quite highly.
